The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesian Dr. (H.C) Puan Maharani inspected the location where the 144th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly & Related Meetings will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali. The Indonesian House will host the meetings of world parliaments that will take place on 20-24 March 2022.

During the inspection at Bali Convention Center and Westin Hotel, the House Speaker held coordination meeting with the Vice Speaker of the House for Politics and Security, Lodewijk Freidrich Paulus; Vice Chairperson of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation, Gilang Dhiela Fararez; Member of the House, Evita Nursanty; Secretary General of the House Indra Iskandar and officials of the Secretariat General of the House.

In the meeting, Maharani stressed the essential role of the supporting facilities for all participants attending the assembly including the press. “We should ensure that we will not have any issue on the internet connection and other supporting facilities must be able to support and help ease the works of all participating parties,” stated Maharani at the meeting in Nusa Dua, Bali, Monday (21/2/2022).

She also requested that the big event should be well organized while also maintaining convenience on other people at the same location and at the same time. “At the airport, I request special lanes for IPU participants so that they can queue in the same lanes. The IPU delegations are used to lining up in a queue and going through immigration process by themselves, but we have to make sure they form an orderly queue and do not cause any disruption to participants and other people,” she added.

To support the organization of the 144th IPU Assembly, the House conducted coordination meetings with several Ministries/Institutions such as Foreign Affairs Ministry, Law and Human Rights Ministry, Transportation Ministry, Health Ministry, and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency/National COVID-19 Task Force. “I also ask to have an intensive coordination with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency and COVID-19 Task Force regarding COVID-19 prevention, particularly on the quarantine facilities for the arriving delegates if their PCR test result is positive,” stated Maharani.

In addition, the House has also prepared a strict health protocol in the organization of the 144th IPU Assembly. To anticipate the spread of COVID-19, the House implements bubble system for all delegates and organizers during the event. The bubble system is a travel corridor arrangement intended to limit interaction only with individuals within the same bubble. Maharani stressed that the system must be implemented with a strict monitoring.

“We have to stay disciplined and adhere to health protocols. All have to be checked. Without an official ID from the organizer, no one will be able to enter the meeting venue. Today, h‘Getting to Zero: Mobilizing Parliament to Act on Climate Change’. Climate change issue is raised as the main theme to be discussed due to its relation to survival and safety of the world. “As global warming is accelerating faster, it leads to, as we have witnessed,  forest and land fires, extreme weather, drought, floods, rising of sea level, damage of agricultural lands, harmful effect to our health, and many others,” stated Maharani.

Addressing these global issues require international cooperation from many countries which can be encouraged through inter-parliamentary cooperation in the IPU forum. Maharani said that Indonesia, as the host of this event, will also include crucial national issues to be discussed in the forum. Subsequently, those issues will be brought to the government forum and turn them into concrete policies. “IPU Assembly also encourages high women’s participation that is in line with the IPU commitment to promote gender equality. IPU also puts forward the principles of inclusive participation and empowerment,” she explained.

Maharani asks the support from the Indonesian people so that this world event can run smoothly. “The success of the Indonesian House in holding this major event will also be an important milestone for Indonesia in the international arena,” concluded the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Affairs.
