Speaking on the sidelines of the 144th IPU Assembly in Nusa Dua, Bali, Wednesday (24/3/2022), Vice Chairperson of the House Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Corporation, Putu Supadma Rudana, said that Indonesia, with its large ethnic groups and cultures, has been blessed with many sources of local wisdom. One of them is Tri Hita Karana which defines a spiritual concept, local wisdom, and way of life of Balinese Hindus to bring harmony to human life. The conference which was held in Nusa Dua, Bali explored the theme of 'Getting to Zero: Mobilizing Parliament to Act on Climate Change'.

“Bali has sources of local wisdom its people always uphold,” he said. “One of them is Tri Hita Karana philosophy. It defines the relationships between man and God, man and nature, and man and man. It has a broad correlation.”

To take an example, Rudana added, Tri Hita Karana might be implemented in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a green economy, an important tool that the world is currently discussing. Under the green economy, citizens will fully participate in economic activities, the economy will steadily grow, and the environment will not be harmed.

 “The philosophy of Tri Hita Karana is one of Bali’s contributions to be considered in the global discussion. We need to ensure issues relating to the environment and climate change may become the main topic of discussion, in order to address those issues after this conference,” he said.

On the issue of climate change, the Democratic Party politician suggested the continued use of items that would not harm the environment by using clean energy and not exploiting nature. 

“Bali has reduced the use of plastic because it has severe effects on the environment. It has become our commitment. Balinese also really protect the environment, beaches, sea, forests, and this is a culture that must be preserved,” he said. (es-mut)
