Vice Chairperson of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation of the House of Representatives Gilang Dhielafararez expressed his hope that the meetings between the President of the Republic of Indonesia and the Russian and Ukrainian Presidents can produce positive results. Indonesia is expected to be able to bridge the two countries to solve the conflict since it is in line with Indonesia’s ideals of realizing world peace.

“Indonesia must be a bridge to achieve peace in Russia - Ukraine conflict. As a country that has lofty ideals, we must actively participate in realizing world peace,” said Dhielafararez in a written statement received by Parliamentaria, in Jakarta, on Tuesday (23/7/2022).

The House Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation supports President Joko Widodo’s foreign visits to meet Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenky in Kiev and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow after attending the G7 Summit in Germany as one of G7 partner countries. Dhielafararez said that peace diplomatic effort is in line with Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy. “Moreover, as the holder of the G20 presidency, Indonesia has a vital role as a mediator for its member countries, including partner countries,” he stated.

He said that the prolonged Russia and Ukraine conflict had adverse impact on humanitarian issues and global crisis. An immediate solution is needed to address the crisis. A number of countries have even faced energy and economy crisis due to Russia’s policies taken during its conflict with Ukraine. “Peace between the two countries has to be reached since the war has affected global economy and food supply chain,” he added.

The House hopes President Jokowi’s visits to Russia and Ukraine can continue to work for a truce between the two countries.  Dhielafararez said, the House has also intensely exercised its parliamentary diplomacy to bridge the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. “The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to take a huge toll on hundreds of thousands of people and that cannot be tolerated. As a country that upholds humanitarian principles, Indonesia cannot remain silent,” he said.

“We, in the House, continue to establish communication with the two countries through parliamentary diplomacy. The House Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation continues to coordinate with parliaments of friendly countries and considering that the Indonesian House will host  the 8th Group of 20 Parliamentary Speakers Summit (P20), we will also use the international forum to work together  on the issue” stated the politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle.

Member of Commission III, however, also reminded the government to maintain Indonesia’s impartial stance. He emphasized the promotion of peaceful solution so that Indonesia can play its role in the peace-making process. “We must also take into consideration our friendly countries taking sides or standing against Russia’s invasion so that our good intention will not harm our country,” he said.

Indonesia’s participation in realizing world peace is stated in the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution. Indonesia must look at the crisis wisely in the effort to create world peace. “As part of the world community, it is a must for Indonesia to play an active role in the world peace,” Dhielafararez asserted.

“Indonesia’s free and active policy in international politics has to be prioritized. The big agenda that has to be addressed is what has been promoted by the House Speaker Puan Maharani:   the world must build a culture of peace,” concluded the legislator from Central Java constituency. (ann/sf)
