House Passes a Law on Simultaneous Regional Elections

The House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia held a Plenary Session, the second stage of deliberation/decision making phase, chaired by the Vice Speaker of the Indonesian House, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad. The Plenary Session reached a final decision on the stipulation of the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) Number 2 of 2020 concerning the Third Amendment to Law Number 1 of 2015 concerning the stipulation of Perppu Number 1 of 2014 on the Elections of Governors, Regents, and Mayors. All legislative members who were present both physically and virtually approved the Bill on Simultaneous Regional Elections and passed it into a law.
“Now we proceed to question. Do you all agree to pass the Bill on Perppu Number 2 of 2020 concerning the Third Amendment to Law Number 1 of 2015 concerning the stipulation of Perppu Number 1 of 2014 on the Elections of Governors, Regents, and Mayors into a law?” Dasco asked all factions in the session at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (14/7/2020). All factions responded by answering yes.
Previously, the Chairperson of Commission II of the Indonesian House, Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tandjung explained that with the passing of the Bill on the Perppu Number 2 of 2020 into a law, Commission II hoped that all parties involved in the Simultaneous Regional Elections, particularly the organizers, such as the General Elections Commission (KPU), the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and the Elections Organization Ethic Council along with the government can maximize all their potentials according to their main tasks and functions based on the applicable laws and regulations for the success of the Simultaneous Regional Elections in December 2020 with full observance of COVID-19 Protocol.
“We extend our gratitude to Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Law and Human Rights for their contribution in the deliberative process of the bill. Our gratitude also goes to all parties that has assisted us in the deliberation of this Bill,” concluded Kurnia
Previously, at the first stage of deliberation, Commission II of the Indonesian House and the government reached a joint agreement on the Bill on Regulation in lieu of Law on Regional Elections. The decision making was carried out at the meeting room of Commission II on 30 June 2020. The Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, and the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, attended the meeting at that time as the representatives of the government. Subsequently, the bill must go through the second process of deliberation at the Plenary Session held on Tuesday 14/7/2020 to take a final decision.
